014: The Journey Of Growing A Business To 7 Figures Then Losing It, Building It Back Then Selling It + Outsourcing, Coaching & Taking Action Over Reading with Tristan Wright

I first had the pleasure of meeting Tristan 10 years ago at University Games. Tristan and I have reconnected in the past 18 months and I am very grateful for the conversations that we have and love that I now have one recorded and featuring here!

Tristan started off as wanting to supply his fellow riders with cycling attire so they could all look they were in the Tour de France as they would head down popular Melbourne cycling route beach road.

Through his passion and the realisation that there was a gap in the market for quality and affordable cycling wear, Seight was born!

Fast forward to 7 years later and it was a whirlwind of adventure. From his international contacts, Tristan moved into Outsourcing before finding his calling as a business coach, consultant and strategist.

We also discuss the times that Tristan has helped me – where it had started out as mates chatting and ends in me being equipped with strategies from what turned into a coaching session.

This is a fascinating story from a fascinating man. So please enjoy this conversation with Tristan Wright.

My Biggest Take-Aways

  • When outsourcing, be aware of just how black and white and how clear you must be when describing the task that is being outsourced.
  • It is crucial to have a network of coaches, advisors and mentors to help through the highs and lows
  • Understanding what you want in life is so important. Do you want to grow a business internationally or do you want to have work/life balance?
  • If you remover your exit strategy (your easy way out in this instance) you’re going to succeed
  • Everyone can do it on their own, it’ll just take longer to get there
  • Be active on social media and be the subject matter expert that you are (Sidenote: I’m hearing this from more and more people)
  • ‘It’s just about give, give, give. Be genuine, be who are you are people will be attracted to that and it will come.’
  • ‘Do what you’re passionate about. As long as you’re passionate and you’re giving value through that passion, you will be able to build your business.’
  • You can’t bank margin, you can bank dollars.’
  • When I surrounded myself with influential people or people that I wanted to be like, my business was able to grow. You are the people that you spend the most time with. So when I was able to do that, my business went up. When I wasn’t, my business went down.
  • You want to surround yourself with people 2 to 3 levels above you and you want to be coached or mentored or guided by someone 5 levels ahead of you
  • People don’t how to take action and that is what you need to do to make a business work.
